The Suttle Lodge
I spent a two week artist residency at The Suttle Lodge and made several bodies of work.
A Painting Can Be A Sketch
This was an art show I had in collaboration with Cole Lyons at Radius Art Studio.
Cole and Lettie Jane both consider looseness, gesture, and presence important in their work. They conceived of the concept of this show with that in mind: painting need not be a precious endeavor. As teachers and practicing artists they both hold their own and witness others artists' anxieties around finishing artwork.
Cole draws thumbnails to work out his design and composition. This way he can be confident, gestural and intuitive in his painting approach. Lettie Jane greets each piece of paper without a clear plan and begins to follow lines and colors to guide the process. You could say that Cole begins with a tighter design to end up looser, while Lettie Jane gradually tightens a loose beginning.
Lettie Jane and Cole teach art classes at Radius’s sister studio, Ulna. (215 SE Morisson). As teachers both artists want to build confidence in their students and share the ability to make art with everyone.

In January I participated in a self-guided artist residency where I made a series of self-portraits as a relaxed and gender queer human.
