RECOMMENDATIONS

I write a weekly newsletter, which usually has a section about what I’m reading, watching or learning. This page is a few of those kind of resources.

BOOKS THAT SHAPED MY PRACTICE

  • Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown

  • Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmel

  • A Psalm For The Wild Built by Becky Chambers

BOOKS SPECIFICALLY ABOUT MAKING ART

  • The Creative Act by Rick Rubin

  • Make Your Art No Matter What by Beth Pickens

  • Art, Inc by Lisa Congdon (the first book to teach me that art is valuable!)

  • It might feel a little dated, but I did find The Artist Way by Julia Cameron pivotal in calling myself an artist.

BOOKS I RECOMMEND TO FELLOW MOTHER ARTISTS

  • Orange World by Karen Russell (fiction, short stories)

  • Night Bitch by Rachel Yoder (fiction, novel)

  • Touched Out: Motherhood, Misogyny, Consent, and Control by Amanda Montei

  • The Baby on the Fire Escape: Creativity, Motherhood, and the Mind-Baby Problem by Julie Phillips

MY LIFE COACH, WHO IS INDISPENSABLE TO MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE

ACCOUNTING

MUSIC

  • My Spotify Playlists

  • I love to make music mixes and have loved it since I was in Middle School when I recorded songs off the radio and dubbed them onto other tapes. There are better ways to support artists, but Spotify makes it so easy to put them all together in one playlist.

ART SUPPLIES

  • I don’t like to feel intimated by art supplies, sometimes I think having really beautiful paper or paint brushes can be an invitation to creation and sometimes a barrier. Take what you need, leave the rest, here is my favorite watercolor set:

    • Kuretake Gansai watercolor pans, super pigmented color

WOO

A WORK OF ABSOLUTE BEAUTY

  • Genius Loci is an animation by Adrien Merigeau and Brecht Evens that stops me in my tracks every time.
